It’s Time to Think About Healthspan Instead of Lifespan
Wouldn’t it be great to live to be 100 years old? Actually, for most of us, the answer is “not really.” The very few people who make it to their 100th birthday are typically frail, dependent on care workers, and unable to live independently. Often, they have lost a significant amount of vision and hearing. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, one in three people over the age of 85 suffers from dementia.
Most of us wouldn’t want to live for an extended amount of time if we couldn’t also enjoy a decent quality of life. That is why when we think about and talk about aging, the convention of “lifespan,” is too short sighted. Quantity is nothing without quality.
